Electrical Equipment

Bungalows and Villas in French Polynesia come equipped with standard French outlets which feature two side-by-side round prongs on a 220-volt system (like they use in Europe).

Electrical Plug Adapter:

At the very minimum, you will need an electrical plug adapter designed for European plugs, like the one shown in the video above.

This may suffice for electrical equipment like modern smartphones or laptops that have built in converters.  However, we strongly recommend that you check your equipment to make sure you won't need a "converter" so you do not damage your equipment.

Electrical Voltage Converter:

Because we use a 110-volt system in the United States, appliances such as hair dryers, will require a voltage converter to convert the electricity from 220 volts to 110 volts.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that travelers bring a combination converter AND adapter (see examples below).

However, these items are more expensive than just a plug adapter and if your electronics do not need a converter, you can save money by purchasing the Adapter Only version.

You'll find the best prices through the links above.  If you are in a rush, you can also buy a converter/ adapter at many stores including Wal-Mart and Target.

Of note, in some newly remodeled hotels, you will find USB ports which you can plug directly into.  But, these are still a pleasant surprise, rather than the expectation.

Also, in some hotels, there may be a US style plug in the bathroom.  These are intended for electric shavers and will probably not be safe for equipment that does not come with a built in converter.

If you are traveling without a plug adapter/ voltage converter, it’s always wise to always inquire at the hotel desk about the compatibility of your appliances before you attempt to use them.
