We recommend using your credit or debit card wherever possible since it is the safest and most convenient method of payment. You will often get the best exchange rate when paying by credit card too. Major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover) are accepted in most hotels, shops, and restaurants on the major islands. However, they may not always be accepted at markets or smaller, local shops or the less traveled to islands.
Therefore, we strongly recommend that travelers carry a few hundred dollars of local currency, so they will have it on hand if needed.
