There are several public phones in Papeete and on most islands which can be operated with phone cards (OPT). You will find these phones everywhere in French Polynesia, even in the most remote atolls. The prepaid “OPT Card” is sold at the Tahiti Philately website (www.tahitiphilatelie.com), in all 80 Post Office branches and by licensed retailers.
Our Travel Specialists often use SKYPE. FaceTime, or “Wi-Fi” calling to call from the islands since it is easy and inexpensive (or free in most cases). Because the hotels charge VERY HIGH rates for local calls, you should consider using SKYPE, a calling card, public phone, or a prepaid phone card and only use the hotel phone as a last resort.
Cell phone service is generally good in the islands. We recommend that you check with your carrier to see what type of international calling plans they offer for French Polynesia, although they are typically quite expensive. You should also find out if you need to take any steps to enable your phone for international calling.
It is also possible to purchase rechargeable prepaid card from one of French Polynesia’s wo mobile phone network providers – Vini or Vodafone. You can find these cards at the local Post Office shops in the islands or at a licensed retailer. You can also purchase these cards online at www.vini.pf. Just in case you damage or lose your mobile phone, you can also purchase a ready-to-use Viniphone pack (mobile phone + phone number + card credits).
