The local dress code is very casual, and we recommend light clothing that breathes easy, such as cotton. Formal wear is never needed, and you will almost never see tennis shoes in the islands (except fellow travelers on their way to the gym). For a nice restaurant, men should feel comfortable in a golf or collared Tiki/Tropical shirt with a pair of slacks and sandals. Women will normally wear a sundress and sandals. Pareos are also very popular which are brightly colored and versatile. Downtown Papeete does have a more urban dress code more in line with downtown Honolulu. Bathing suits and shorts would be out of place in downtown Papeete, for example.
